About
The Nylander Museum of Natural History was founded in 1939 as a place to house various artifacts collected by its namesake, Olaf O. Nylander. Mr. Nylander served as the museum's curator until his death until his death in 1943. Mr. Nylander was born in 1864, and became infatuated with natural history in his youth. He became a self-taught naturalist over the course of his life and was awarded an honorary Master of Science degree in 1938 by the University of Maine at Orono. Today, a life-size wax statue of Mr. Nylander presides over the south gallery, startling employees and patrons alike.
